Spuds MacKenzie
I was watching an old TV show this morning and they "interviewed" Spuds MacKenzie. I hadn't thought about Spuds in years and decided to try to dig up some information. TV Acres has a pretty succinct biography on the beer mascot:
Billed as the "The Original Party Animal," Spuds with an entourage of 3 beautiful women known as the Spudettes, danced, skateboarded, high-dived, played hockey and rode horses across the TV screens of America. One poster campaign ("Free to Party") depicted Spuds at the signing of the Declaration of Independence where he declared "Let the Party Begin!"
Although popular with the public at large, such groups as The Center for Science in the Public Interest and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) decried the use of Spuds fearing it would entice young children to drink alcohol. He was later "drafted" to warn teenagers and other young people about the dangers of drinking and driving.
Spuds' (actually a female) real name was Honey Tree Evil Eye. She also appeared in the Martin Mull, Dick Shawn movie Rented Lips (1987).
Spuds' last years were spent in the North Riverside, Illinois, home of her owners Stan and Jackie Oles. After Spuds died of kidney failure in May of 1993 (at the age of 10) late night comedian Jay Leno informed the television viewers of THE TONIGHT SHOW that the family requested that no flowers be sent to the funeral but they could however send trees.
My goal is to find some of the weirdest Spuds memorabilia and share it, but in the mean time here are a few commercials to whet your appetitie for beer and bull

184 Days of the 1962 Seattle World's Fair - Day 70: "Peep" Backstage, U.S.A. (NSFW)
Today we have a souvenir booklet from "Peep" Backstage U.S.A. during the Fair. This booklet features all of the shows that occurred during the Fair along with names of risqué (for 1962) photos of the performers. Peep was a Jack D. Matlack presentation. Matlack died in 1990 and was a bit of a character. You can see his obituary here.
You can see the entire (NSFW due to some very "gentle" 1962 nudity) booklet after the jump.

The Human Body (Male) by Colorforms
A few weekends ago I found this awesome 1970 Colorforms still in tact. The box shows a little age but the booklet and all the pieces were still there. The best part about the set was that it cost me $.25. Here's a crappy cell phone picture of the box (my actual camera was stolen) and a scan of the booklet.

1987 WWF Trading Cards
This past weekend, I found an un-opened pack pack of 1987 WWF Topps trading cards at yard sale for 50 cents. I debated for a while whether I should open it or not. I weighed all the pros and cons and decided that my curiosity was worth more to me than a 50 cent pack of wrestling trading cards. Instead of keeping the cards for myself, I thought it'd be fun for me to open the cards, scan them in the order they came in, and share them on here.

Kind of an odd card. it shows one of the members of the Killer Bees performing one of the most basic "aerial" moves in wrestling. I am not sure why this warranted a trading card.

| #9 - Hercules and Bobby "The Brain" Heenan |
"Hercules believes he is the reincarnation of a Greek hero and strongman from ages past. Whether or not he is right, the real Hercules couldn't have been any stronger, or nastier, than he is. Heenan is Hercules' manager and one of the sneakiest - and smartest - men in wrestling." This was about a year before Bobby Heenan sold Hercules' (yes, like a slave) services. Only in wrestling.

Overall the pack wasn't all that interesting. It had some historic wrestling moments but the rest of the cards were uninteresting. Next week, for the Fourth of July, I will open a pack of Desert Storm trading cards I bought for a nickel at a different yard sale.

184 Days of the 1962 Seattle World's Fair - Day 66: Natural Gas Pavilion Character Analysis Wheel
This is a strange little piece of ephemera from the Fair. It is a character analysis (horoscope) wheel given to you when you entered the Natural Gas Pavilion. The back features a map of the layout of the Natural Gas Pavilion.

A couple of pamphlets from All Detergent. Not sure of the date of these. I am guess they're from the mid-to-late 1950s.

For Those Who Think Young
My wife and I just finished watching the 1964 movie "For Those Who Think Young." The movie stars James Darren, Pamela Tiffin, Nancy Sinatra, Ellen McRae (aka Ellen Burstyn), Paul Lynde, Tina Louise and Bob Denver (Gilligan). The movie makes very little sense and rambles in and out of story lines. There was, however, one memorable scene:
Recipes from Old Cookbooks: Put The Un In Cooking Fun with 7up The Uncola
"Un in Cooking? That's Right...When a recipe calls for a liquid, use sparkling 7up, The Uncola!" That is the basis of this recipe book published in 1969 by the Seven-Up Co. of St. Louis, Missouri.
The booklet features fourteen pages of recipes that demand you use 7up instead of whatever sane product you would use. There are recipes for cocktails (of the non-alcoholic variety) that features a crazy cutting board man with a knife for a forehead.
Dips, Vegetables, Salads, Breads, Cookies, Cakes, Desserts and pies all have a recipes featuring the uncola. The pie section has an illustration that kind of baffles me.
I am not sure if the pieman has the pies made already and all we have to do is track him down or if we, ourselves, are the pieman and need these recipes to prove our piemanliness.
The recipe for this week is from the weirdly named "From...Hoof Feather & Fin" section
SALMON LOAF WITH VEGETABLE-CHEESE SAUCE
1 (one lb.) can salmon
1 cup 7UP
3/4 cup dry bread crumbs
1 egg
1/2 cup sour cream
2 tbsp. chopped onion
2 tbsp. chopped green pepper
1 tbsp. lemon juice
1/3 cup melted butter or margarine
1/2 tsp. salt
Drain salmon and remove skin and bones. Flake salmon into small pieces. Add remaining ingredients; mix well. Spoon into 9 X 5-inch loaf pan and pack firmly. Bake in 350° F. oven for 50 to 60 minutes. While salmon loaf is baking, prepare sauce.

184 Days of the 1962 Seattle World's Fair - Day 62: Motion Lamp
A motion lamp from the Fair. I cannot tell how badly I want one of these. I have seen them from time to time but they always fetch at least one more zero than I am willing to spend.
